| Additional ResourcesSt. Augustine of CanterburyOur parish is named for the first Archbishop of Canterbury. St. Augustine landed on the coast of Kent in the Spring of 597, together with a company of about 40 monks from a monastery on the Coelian Hill in Rome. They arrived carrying a silver cross and an image of Jesus Christ painted on a board (an icon.) Sent by Pope Gregory the Great their mission was to convert the Anglo-Saxon population that had invaded and settled in the region, and to establish an English Church. His feast day in the proper of the Anglican office is May 26, the true anniversary of his death; in the Roman Calendar it is 28 May. |
